What is a Concrete Masonry Unit?

A Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) is a precast rectangular block made from cement, aggregate and water, cast under controlled factory conditions to a fixed dimension and strength grade. Also called a concrete block or hollow block, a CMU is laid in courses with mortar to build load-bearing walls, foundations, partitions and boundary walls. Depending on the mix and core design, a CMU can be supplied hollow (for lighter, non-structural work), solid or dense (for structural and below-grade use), or thermally insulated (for energy-efficient external walls).

Built Into Every Block

STRENGTH

Compressive strength

Rated from 3.5 N/mm² up to 17.5 N/mm² depending on block density, verified for structural and foundation use.

DIMENSIONS

Consistent tolerance

Factory-cast to fixed dimensional tolerance, keeping mortar joints even and course heights predictable on site.

FIRE

Fire resistance

Non-combustible by nature, with fire-resistance rating increasing with wall thickness — suited to fire-rated separating walls.

ACOUSTIC

Sound insulation

Mass and density reduce airborne sound transmission, useful for party walls in residential and mixed-use buildings.

LIFESPAN

Durability

Resistant to UAE heat, humidity and salt exposure in coastal areas, with a long in-service life and minimal degradation.

UPKEEP

Low maintenance

No coatings or treatments required to perform structurally, reducing lifecycle maintenance cost versus lighter systems.

Where CMU is Specified

Foundations

Dense, high-strength blocks below grade for footings and foundation walls.

Structural walls

Load-bearing external and internal walls carrying floor and roof loads.

Partitions

Lighter hollow blocks for internal room division where load is minimal.

Boundary & retaining walls

Weather-durable blocks for site perimeters, compounds and retaining structures.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CMU blocks are typically supplied in widths of 100mm, 150mm and 200mm, with a standard face size of 400mm × 200mm. We produce hollow, solid and thermal-insulated blocks across this range for partition, load-bearing and structural use.

Yes. Concrete Masonry Units are non-combustible and their fire-resistance rating increases with wall thickness, making them a preferred choice for fire-rated separating walls, stairwells and industrial buildings.

CMU blocks are denser and generally stronger in compression, suiting load-bearing and structural applications. AAC (autoclaved aerated concrete) blocks are lighter with higher thermal insulation but lower compressive strength, so they're more common in non-load-bearing partitions

Pricing depends on block size, density, order volume and delivery location. We provide itemised quotes based on project drawings or a bill of quantities — contact the team for current rates.

Blocks are manufactured to meet the compressive strength, dimensional tolerance and durability requirements set out in applicable local regulations and recognised international masonry standards. Ask us for the test certificates relevant to your emirate and project type before procurement.
